Spring & Summer Events

Throughout the year the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association offers many exciting programs and activities in which the general public is welcome to attend. It’s at this time when visitors can visit historic Joanna Furnace and see what it was like to live and work in an early American iron-making community.

This year’s planned events and activities are as follows:

Irish Breakfast Buffet – Saturday, March 17, 2018 – 7 am to 12 noon. Our buffet Includes: Pancakes, French Toast, County Sausage, Homemade Corned Beef Hash, Bacon, Scrapple, Creamed Chipped Beef, Scrambled Eggs, Country Style Potatoes, Baked Oatmeal, Fruit, Coffee, Tea, Juice and more. Reservations are not required to attend. Live music is included with this Irish themed Breakfast.

PA Dutch Chicken Pot Pie and Chili Sale – Thursday, March 22, 2018. Yes, you can eat our famous Chicken Pot Pie and homemade Chili before our Fall Festivals . Cost $8.00 per quart. Order deadline: Thursday, March 17th. Pick-up orders Thursday, March 22nd between 12 noon and 5 pm. Click here to complete and mail the order form or call 610-286-0388 to order by credit card.

Spring Clean-up at Joanna Furnace – Volunteers are welcome to come to Joanna Furnace on Saturday, April 7th from 9 am to 12 noon to help with the spring clean-up of our historic site. Please bring a rake, gloves, weed clippers or any garden tools that would be helpful to you. Attention community groups — If you are looking for service projects our spring cleanup is a great activity for your entire group. A small lunch will be served to all volunteers who help with the clean-up.

Early American Craftsmen Day & Breakfast Buffet – Saturday, April 21, 2018 – 7 to 12 noon. Join us on this spring day as we open up our historic buildings day and let you tour our 225 year old historic site. Visitors will learn about metal casting, blacksmithing, candle dipping, gardening, opening fire cooking and more. The morning starts with our delicious buffet and flea market at 7 am. Tours of the site run from 9 am to 12 noon.

Victorian Tea – Saturday, May 12, 2018 Held mother’s day weekend at Joanna Furnace this beautiful event offers fanciful foods and a historical program. Hay Creek Classic Car Show ….. AND Plant Sale! – Saturday, May 19, 2018 – 7 am to 2 pm. Our day will be packed with a wide array of activities but most importantly we will be honoring our Veterans! This special event features a car show with classic, antique hot rod, muscle, military vehicles…. Plus motorcycles of all types. One-of-a-kind trophies will be awarded! $10 entry fee for all vehicles. Click here to download registration form.

Hay Creeks popular springtime plant sale will also take place… herbs, perennials, and annuals… will be available to purchase at the Joanna Furnace herb garden. All plants were grown by members and volunteers of the Association.

Here is a rundown of events that will take place at the Hay Creek Classic Car Show & Plant Sale:

  • Pancake & Sausage Breakfast – 7 to 11 am. Lunchtime foods available starting at 10 am.
  • Flea Market – 7 am
  • Plant Sale & Garden Tours – 8 am.
  • Veterans gathering with military displays — 9 am – On this special day we will honor Veterans from all wars. The public is invited to meet our veterans and to listen to their stories as they show off their memorabilia from their service time.
  • Mechanical Technology Exhibits & Saw Mill Demonstrations – 9 to 11 am.
  • Joanna Furnace History Tours – 9 am to 12 noon.
  • Hill Climb with Pre-1940 cars – 12:30 pm.
  • Veterans Review and Parade –1:15 pm
  • Military re-enactors including Vietnam War, Korean War, WWII, WWI, Civil War and Revolutionary War reenactors.
  • Musical Entertainment throughout the day.

The Ironmasters Wedding at Joanna Furnace – a Celebration of the 1868 wedding of L. Heber and Ella Jane (Grubb) Smith – Saturday, June 16, 2018 – 5 to 9 pm. The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association is proud to partner with Fecho Productions, LLC in cooperation with the Genesius Theater from Reading PA to bring you a one-of-kind living history experience that will honor our last ironmaster and his wife. This special event includes a wedding reenactment and reception ….with dinner, music and dancing. Music will be provided by Becks Brass Band from New Jersey and the Civil War Dance Ensemble from Middletown, PA will show us the dances of the 1860’s. They will also provide a dance master and floor managers so guests can participate in the dancing. Guests to this summer social will interact with historical figures from 1868 and become part of the show! Cost if $65.00 per person or $120 per couple. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT 2018 SPRING & SUMMER EVENTS

BREAKFAST INFORMATION

The all-you-can-eat Breakfasts’ will take place the third Saturday of the month from February to June starting at 7 am. The homemade meal includes fresh country sausage, ham, bacon, chipped cream beef, scrambled eggs, hash browns, fruit, toast, juice, coffee, and more. Reservations are not required to attend our Breakfast Buffet. Cost is $9.00 for adults, $4.50 for children aged 5 to 11 and free for children under the age of 5.

FLEA MARKET INFORMATION

The Hay Creek Valley Historical Association will offer a flea market with its monthly Breakfast in the following months – April and May. Booths are $10.00 each (or Free to Hay Creek Valley Historical Association Members – click here to join).

The flea market opens at 7 am and features antique & vintage items, tools, household, books, crafts and kids items. Reservations are not necessary to participate as a vendor. Stands are first-come, first served with set-up starting at 6 am. Please bring your own table. For flea market information please contact Kathleen at 610-914-8152.

PARKING INFORMATION

Parking for our monthly events (February – June) is on the Joanna Furnace site. We are located 3 miles north of Morgantown, PA. Turn at Furnace Road and follow signs to our parking area. (GPS 1250 Furnace Road, Birdsboro/ Robeson Township, PA 19508.)
